On Simplistic Website Design
While working on my website over the past year and a half, I've found myself designing and redesigning and redesigning it to fit my perfect vision for it. As I have seen more and more interestingly and beautifully designed sites, I frequently get inspired to redesign my site in more Avant Garde and abstract ways, as many of the site I love take on those kinds of aesthetics.
However, I have found that the more strange I make my website, the less I feel like I can ever update it. The more abstract the site, the more complicated the code. There's also an expectation that I create myself to make every page unique, which makes the addition of more pages feel daunting and laborious.
Instead I have found that, at least with my current design, I really enjoy a simplistic site design. A side bar for navigation, a plain main body section, and a header with the site logo on most site pages.
I think this change in attitude was due a reflection both on what I enjoy about running a website and what I really feel my website is for. For others, they may enjoy complex codes and abstract website design for the sake of its own creation! it is an art in its own right and I can easily see why someone might enjoy it!
I on the other hand run a website for the sake of creating the content in it rather than the site itself. The site is a vessel for the stuff I make and a centralized place to put all of those creations. the simple design facilitates this by making uploading those creations like art, blog posts, and reviews easy to upload without having to set up large programs.
I'm really glad I ended up simplifying my design, as its made it much easier to act on bursts of web mastering motivation instead of spending hours trying to get everything to look perfect and never actually uploading any updates.
